This handsome frame dwelling has a square light tower that is elevated to 57 feet above sea level. In the recent past, the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse was deeded from the U.S. Coast Guard to the Marine Police, who turned it over to the town, which completely restored this wonderful navigational aid to its former grandeur. Officially named Harbourtown, it is still referred to as Hilton Head Light by many. One of the more recently built lighthouses, Harbourtown/Hilton Head was constructed in 1970. Originally built in 1907 in Chicago, it was shipped down the Mississippi to the 1940 Exposition in St. Louis. After the Exposition ended, the lighthouse was purchased by the federal government and moved again to Hillsboro, Florida, where it sits today, as the last beach lighthouse erected in Florida. The 137-foot tower houses a second-order lens that emits a 5.5 million-candlepower light, a beacon that shines brightly to sea. Overall lamp height is 25".

About the lighthouse: Located on Jupiter Island where the Loxahatchee River meets the Atlantic. This 105-foot lighthouse, designed by George Meade, the Union commander at the Battle of Gettysburg, was constructed in 1860 on a 40-foot mound of oyster shells to enhance the light's reach to the ocean. About the lighthouse: Middle Bay, built in 1885 in Mobile, is a style of lighthouse most frequently employed in Chesapeake Bay, but used here as well, since it is located out in the middle of a bay. The lighthouse consists of a hexagonal cottage, with the lantern rising from its pyramid-shaped roof. The entire structure sits up above the water on iron pilings that are screwed securely into the muddy floor of the bay. Overall lamp height is 24".
